One box, both directions
There are only two things anyone wants from a PIN code lookup: the PIN for a place, or the place for a PIN. Making somebody choose a mode for that is pointless, so this tool decides from what you typed. Six digits is a PIN code. Anything else is a place name.
Type 683102 and you get the area it covers. Type Ernakulam and you get the PIN codes serving it. There is no mode switch to get wrong.
Results are grouped by PIN code, not listed as offices
This is the design decision that makes the tool usable, and it is worth explaining because most PIN directories do the opposite.
An Indian PIN code averages around eight and a half post offices, and the busiest reach more than a hundred and fifty. Return those as a flat list and the one fact almost everybody came for — which PIN code covers this place— is buried under a wall of branch office names. So the PIN code is the answer here, and the offices under it are its detail. You see the codes first, and open one if you need the branches.
What a place search will and will not do
Place searches need at least three characters. Below that a search matches a sizeable fraction of the country and stops being a search at all.
Results are also capped — both the number of PIN groups returned and the number of offices shown inside each group. A search like post genuinely does match thousands of rows, and returning all of them would be slower and no more useful than returning the first screenful. If your search hits the cap, the fix is a more specific term rather than more scrolling.
Where the data comes from
The directory is India Post’s own, covering every post office in the country with its PIN code, district and state. It is a published dataset rather than a scrape, which is why the branch names look bureaucratic — they are the official names, not friendlier ones somebody invented.
It is worth knowing what that means for accuracy. India Post’s directory tells you which office serves an area. It does not tell you whether a particular courier delivers there, whether cash on delivery is available, or how long a parcel takes. Those depend on the carrier, not the postal code.
Why sellers end up here
Most people who look up PIN codes on this site are checking an address before shipping to it. A PIN that does not exist, or one that sits in a completely different state from the one written on the order, is worth catching before the parcel leaves — that is a return in the making, and returns cost the shipping both ways.
If you have a batch rather than a single address, the checking happens in a different place. The duplicate and risk checkreads a whole label PDF and flags orders whose address block is too short to be deliverable, orders repeating to one address, and any PIN code on a list you supply yourself — which is where the PIN codes that have actually cost you returns belong. This page is for the one-off question; that tool is for the day’s batch.
